I'm in the Sunday Star Times!

On Sunday December 19th 2010, there I was in the Sunday Star Times - along with Chris and Kids from Pt England School.  Check out the article here:
swimwide
WATER-WISE: Starford Toa in the portable pool at Auckland's Pt England School, where pupils are getting water education.

If schools can't get their students to a pool, why not bring the pool to the school?
It sounds far-fetched, but that's exactly what WaterSafe Pools2Schools programme is doing in Auckland.
Chief executive Sandy Harrop says schools face a lot of barriers when it comes to giving their students an aquatic education.
"These barriers are identified by schools as support for teachers and the cost of pool entry, tuition, transport [and] time out of school," she says.
Pools2Schools breaks down all those barriers by bringing the pool – and all that goes with it – to the school.
The programme was trialled at Papakura's Red Hill Primary school last year using a 10m by 5m vinyl portable pool borrowed from Premier Exhibitions.
Deputy principal Charlotte Castle said that when the school started working with WaterSafe, it realised a lot of its students didn't even know how to float. Now, thanks to $95,000 of KiwiSport funding, Pools2Schools has its own portable pool, water filter system, heat pump, scaffolding, marquee, security fencing and trailer.
It also comes with WaterSafe Auckland's aquatic education facilitator Chris Burton, who teaches the students and the teachers. Burton says Pools2Schools is not just about teaching kids how to swim 200m – a goal set out in the national curriculum.
"That's not necessarily going to help you in a rip," he says. "It's about building a knowledge base and decision making."
Decisions such as when to signal for help, how to fit a life jacket and how to duck-dive under big waves.
For the past seven weeks the covered pool has been at east Auckland's Pt England School. When the Sunday Star-Times visited, Year 5 students were learning how to use their hands like ice-cream scoops and how to stay warm and float in the water.
"I feel like a safer swimmer," 10-year-old Crusader Faletagoai says. "I didn't know how to do it properly before." Classmate Prince Scanlan says he's going to show his three and six-year-old sisters what he's learnt in the pool this term. Teacher Helen Squires says the students have also enjoyed lunchtime classes in the pool with Water Polo NZ, Surf Lifesaving and Olympic swimmer Hayley Palmer. Fellow teacher Jody Wild says her Year 1 students have "come along in leaps and bounds".

Gohan Vs Cell

Gohan has been training for a day, but it felt like a year for him. Goku and Gohan were training to defeat cell and they trained very hard for that. Gohan was ready to fight Cell, Gohan powered and transformed into super saiyin 2 he was very angry so they started fighting and it began with an even round. “AAAAAAAAAAAAA” Cell yelled going into full form it made the world shake like an earthquake. All of a sudden Cell gave Gohan all he had got but with a sneaky shot Gohan toke a punch to the body then a powerful kick to the face of Cell. Making Cell angry he puts up a final blast the KAMEHAMEHA “NO” Goku said, Gohan puts on a KAMEHAMEHA too. it was the ultimate battle but in the end Gohan finished Cell off.

The first week of Swimming

The first week of swimming, “Yaaaaay we’re finally going to do something cool!” I said in my mind. I just couldn’t stop chattering excitedly to my friends. It was freezing as I squeezed my arms into the wet and clammy life jacket. It was a tight fit and I couldn’t stop fidgeting with it. Chris came and adjusted my it for me.

Chris was our instructor and he is here to help us with water safety for the rest of the term. It is an amazing opportunity to learn about it. He works for Water Safety NZ. On the first day of week 4 a huge portable pool had magically appeared on the school’s senior courts. Chris is going to be taking us every Wednesday.

Jumping into the pool I was shivering and shaking, My teeth started chattering. My lips went purple as the water was freezing cold. Chris told us to get in the help position for ten seconds to conserve our energy.

“Hold onto each others life jacket” Chris said we huddled up. We formed a circle and sang the New Zealand anthem while Chris spun us around. When we were finished we practise the doggy paddle.

Getting bit by a Rotweiler dog

On sunday afternoon I went to my friends house Lorenzo and he has two dogs, a Rotweiler and another one. As I went to get some bread I gave some to the Rotweiler and his name was Buster. Then we went on the trampoline and started playing wrestling. It was getting boring so Lorenzo hopped off then I did and he went to play with the other dog as I was walking with the Rotweiler. I patted the dog then all of a sudden he turned his head and bit me!!! Aaaaaaaaaa I started crying for about 10 seconds.
After that bite Lorenzo's Mum rushed me to the doctors and took me into a room and told me to wait. Lorenzo brought some cards along and we played last card. After twenty minutes or more the nurse squeezed it together and put a tiny plaster on but that was all. After waiting for twenty minutes!

Immersion Assembly

The first day of term 4 yaaaaaaaay, I am so excited to be back at school playing with my friends.
I wonder what we’re learning about.

An Immersion Assembly is when all the kids gather together an on the first day of each term and see what our new topic is. As my class and I went through the entrance doors I spotted people with costumes of bugs, and I found out that our new topic was Little Critters.

My favourite team was team 4 because it was funny! It was about a colony of bees and Mr Barks was the queen bees, while the others were servants. All of a sudden a little teddy bear rapped in toilet paper popped out and three more babies came out. It was funny!!!!!!!

My second favourite was team 3 which was the Next Top Little Critter. Mrs Barks, Miss Walter, Mrs MacKinley, Miss Maud and Miss Lavakula cat walked on to the stage and announced themselves. Mrs Barks was a black lady bug with red dots. She was showing off about how she was the prettiest when out of the blue “I love you” her husband shouted and everyone started laughing.

I hope that there could be another funny Immersion Assembly again.

Fiafia Practice

This year our whole school is getting part of Fiafia to represent there nation to proudly perform to our family and friends. The group I'm in, is the hard, strong and powerful TONGAN group. Our mentor are Mrs Jarman and Mrs Mood. I'm happy to see some of my friends from my class and the year sevens. We are doing the War dance with spares. The gear we are wearing is a Manafaw, white T-shirt and flowers. I'm proud to be in the Tongan group because I was in the Niuean group but my culture wasn't Niuen so this year I finally get to be in the Tongan group.

GOLD GOAST TITANS

This year the Titans have improved a lot and I wish that they can win the NRL Telstra Premiership. Titans have one of the best fullback, halfback, wingers and stand off, Those people are Matt Rogers,Scott Prince and Preston Campell. I liked the Titans since they first started and sometimes I hate them because they always beat the Warriors and I mean ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There team has the best uniform in the game of Rugby League. Right now the Titans have beat the hard runnung Warriors for the quarter finals 28-16 and now they are up for another match against the striking Roosters this week.

RIPPA RUGBY!!!

On Saturday, September 2010, twenty eight children from the year 5,6 and 7 got chosen to represent Pt.England and Scotland (just pretending where not repre
senting Scotland) We got dressed into our playing clothes and went outside to practice our drills.
Then the ACTION came in and we went inside a bus and it looked flash with a toilet, lights, air fresheners and the driver said that this bus was the one that takes the Auckland Blues to their super 14 games. Darius and I were playing arm wrestling and it was funny because I was close to winning then Darius was almost winning, I was getting tired but I pushed as hard as I could and I finally won!!!!!

As we looked out the window I saw EDEN PARK and started to got excited and started to get up and take off my seat beats and walked outside into the howling wind and showering rain. Me and Darius sprinted to the front with Mrs Lavakula and went under the umbrella with rain washing into my face, Finally we made it to the entrance at gate 5. The workers checked all our bags for any bottles or bad things but no one had any. All of us went up the stairs, put on our Scotland T-shirts and walked to our seats as we sat down we spotted some little kids playing Rippa Rugby and the year five and six are going to play in a couple of minutes. It was freezing cold so Me and Darius went to the top and suddenly we spotted lots and lots of Auckland flags, So we grabbed some and back to our seats we went giving them to our friends Samuela,Potaua,Feki and Mrs Va’afusuaga. There was a call for us to go down the field and play Canada. I was hoping we could kick the ball any time but you couldn’t, The siren went and off we went tapping the ball Lepa took the first run then Me I slipped over then passes it to Potaua and he sprinted off but the other team fought back getting two trysin the first half leaving us with one trys. The siren went and that was half time and that,s was only 10 minutes! The second half began and they started it running straight to me and I ripped his tags off and after a while we scored two more trys and we were in the lead until they scored and it was a draw and in the end the score was even and the same with the year sevens. We hopped off the field and went to go get change into our clothes because our Scotland T-shirts were soaking wet. When we went out we saw the Auckland side practicing. Darius said to me “there are two people painting peoples face’s should we go?” “yip” I said, So we had a race up the stairs and waited in line I go my face painted blue and white stripes and NZ on each side then Mrs Va’afusuaga took a photo of me. The siren went but first THE BIG TV SHOWED ME WAVING MY TWO AUCKLAND FLAGS, AMAZING!!!!!! Auckland Kicked off “GO WELLINGTON” someone said. Me and Darius had our lunch I had Doritos and he had lollies. The first try went to Auckland when someone reached out looking for the try line and he did. Try converted from a close range.straight after there was penalty after penalty. getrting kicks at the post. And in the end the score was 21-16 YAAAAAAAAAY we won!!!!! going home feeling good. I will never foget this day. THE END

Christchurch Earthquake

On Saturday morning,at 4.00am there was an earthquake in Christchurch, the size of it was seven point one on the Richter scale. It was a complete surprise for the scientists as it wasn’t on a major fault line.

The earthquake hit the city of Canterbury causing extensive damage. Huge cracks in the road opened up Even the beautiful old buildings with bricks and wood, were all tumbling down. Broken sewage and water pipes are causing floods in the streets. Diseases are a real worry . Lots of houses crashed into the ground but luckily the new ones were made to earthquake safe standards so didn’t fall down, only moved because they are more stable. At least 450 houses were destroyed and 100,000 houses were damaged

The dangers of the earthquake are that there will be after shocks for a while, and that’s bad. Glass is still shattering over the ground and could injure people. There is contaminated mud flowing onto the streets which they are taking to the dump.

I feel sorry for the people of Christchurch because all their houses and cars have been destroyed. But some people still have determination to tidy up for them and that’s helpful.

NRL

NRL is made out of many teams like Gold Coast Titans and the Vodafone Warriors. (I support those teams.) NRL started in 1908 and is still continuing to 2010. I believe that the Warriors are going to the semi finals for 2010. The first teams that joined NRL were the Sydney Roosters, the Penrith Panthers and Balmain Tigers. The first and second to last to join NRL were the Vodafone Warriors and the Gold coast Titans. Back in the days I liked it when legend Mal Maninga was init he was the best!! I liked NRL since I was maybe six I think. Last of all my favourite NRL player will have to be Kevin Locke

Cross Country

"What are you going to come?" I asked Waata and Kingston. Waiting for the race I was nervously sitting in my age group on the hard court shaking my legs thinking in my head “Who’s going to come first, second or third in the ten year olds?”. My group is MATAATUA and they are the best!!!! “What are you going to come?” I asked my friends Waata and Kingston again.

Suddenly Mr Burt shouted to us, “The 11 year old’s are going first.” They started making their way to the start line on the field. After a while the it was the 5 year old’s then the 10 year olds clumped and squished up together.
“Clap” the two woods clashed and started the race off. Everyone charged and shoved to the front but the good thing to do was you needed to keep your legs pumped and pace your self so you could come in the top three.

Off we went down and through the entry to the Pt England reserve. Around the corner we went into the watery mud puddle. I said to my two friends Potaua and Samuela beside me “I’m getting tired” but I still had determination and perseverance inside of me. As us three boys kept going I suddenly slowed down and Potaua and Samuela went ahead.

After all that running I managed to get a spot into the top three. I was so excited and stink at the same time because after all that, I’m competing in the zone cross country next week.

Jesse Martin

In 1998 Jesse Martin sailed on a yacht called the Lion Heart because he wanted to circumnavigate the whole world to prove to everyone that he can achieve his goal that he had dreamed since the age of 14.
When there was a storm the wind howled and waves crashed into the gunnels it was an horrible day for him. He went through very physical and mental challenges. At times he was also so lonely his mind was wandering, like when he said he would turn off the radio then he forgot so he turned on the radio over and over again. Every day he had to stay on his boat in the same place with a little room for 11 MONTHS!!!!
I think that Jesse Martin wanted to circumnavigate the world because he wanted to show everyone they can do anything if they have determination and perseverance.

The Beast!

Do you know the big Tongan and KIWI winger for the New Zealand Warriors, He has a shiny gold tooth and curly hair, do you have a clue?Well his name is MANU VATUVeI He is one of the best wingers in the whole world can you belive it.... Almost every game he plays he always gets easy corner tries. And I have a picture of it check it out. Things I like about Manu Vatuvei is his powerful legs, strong body and his very big jumps in the air. I think if the Warriors didn't have Manu they would of had been in 14th place on the ladder do you think? Manu Vatuvei has been playing for the Warriors for maybe 5,6 years

Manu Vatuvei's worst game was against the Parramata Eels long ago.On tvnz and told every body. And last week round 23 2010 he got an hat-trick against the New castle Knights.

NRL BIG HITS

NRL big hits is one of my favorite things in National Rugby League like tries and brawls!! Everytime I go on the Computer I go on Youtube and tipe in “here comes the boom NRL big hits” and it shows you very exciting videos mostly I like Sonny Bill and Chris Sandows because Sonny Bills left and right shoulder and Chris Sandows hit against Roosters when Issac Luke booms the ball up into Shuan Kenny dowell once he caught it Chris Sandows hit him right on the ground. When I watch the videos Sonny Bill always hits the Gold Coast TITANS player Luke Bailey!!! and they were huge!! Also Ukula U’atai puts his right shoulder into the Eels player Hindmarsh giving him an injury to his jaw.

Maritime Museum

Mighty Mariners is our new topic for this term (term 3) so far we went to Maritime Museum .

We traveled on a public bus,the ride was really long, really boring and really hot!! The most boring bit was when we had to get off the bus because all the boys at the back were relaxed and had sore legs (they were really lazy!) We walked over the crossings the
old man named Salty Sam he was very mean! Salty Sam is a gruff and grumpy Captain on board. “Don’t touch!!” Salty Sam said bellowing orders while taking us through the guided tour around the Maritime Museum and there was lots of fancy and old stuff there

We traveled on a public bus,the ride was really long, really boring and really hot!! The most boring bit was when we had to get off the bus because all the boys at the back were relaxed and had sore legs (they were really lazy!) We walked over the crossings the took off our bags in a plain room then we meet an old man named Salty Sam he was very mean! Salty Sam is a gruff and grumpy Captain on board. “Don’t touch!!” Salty Sam said bellowing orders while taking us through the guided tour around the Maritime Museum There was lots of fancy and old stuff there

In the middle of our tour we went through the immigrant ship cabin, it was so dark and dingy with bunks. (It was a replica of another ship) After Salty Sam finished we did a count down from five down to zero and a cannon shot a cannon ball out into the sky. How Amazing! The last thing was the Movie. We were just about to walk in when suddenly…..WOW automatic doors! We hadn't even got in and it was already exciting!!! The movie began and it looked like some people were doing a fare well dance to all these people on an island.

Obviously my favorite part in this was gong on the FERRY to Devonport!!!!! because the Ted-Ashby (the ship we were supposed to go on) had something wrong with it. But first we needed to wait and wait and wait til Waata, Crusader, Darius, Kingston, Gabriel and I met a very kind man called Peter. He was into many sports as well as NRL, National Rugby League!
Finally we went on the FERRY!!!!

Warriors Vs Titans

W
arriors vs Titans was an exhausting game with all the excitement going around in the fans head. The Voda
fone Warriors were winning then losing to the Gold Coast Titans 20 points - 28. At home I yelling at home on the chair that one of the Titans players high tackled a Warriors players and the crowd was booing but the ref didn't care how useless. When James Maloney (the goal kicker) got the second conversion I was cheering because he finally got it. After the game we went by the Titans locker rooms and waited for about 30 minutes to the Titans came and were signing my sisters singlet and towel. Then the rest of the Titans were coming out and we giving signatures. Even though I like the Titans I will always like the Warriors!!! Clinton Toopi (he is a former Warrior back in the days a try scorer!) and Now he play,s for the Titans what a shame why did he leave. After the game the next day Gabriel told me that he caught the ball and his brother booted it down the field I have never done that. . The End!!

Titans vs Dragons

As I was looking at all the channels I suddenly spotted NRL Monday night live at nine thirty PM. Round 20 the the eighth place Titans and the first place team keeping up in the front Dragons played at Skilled park up in Gold Coast Australia... "Go Gold Coast Titans your the best I know you can win I'm counting on you Scott Prince!!" I shouted. The ref blew the Wiesel kick off Scoot prince put boot to ball and gave Jamie Selward pressure but he successfully caught the ball and passed it to their forward (prop) and he ran up to my favourite teams strong line and got tackled. "That's tackle one" the ref said to the Titans play the he did and started passing out wide to the wingers to hit full speed. but the Titans still tackled them. That's two and after that was third tackle and finally last and they gave the ball to Selward and he booted it upwards to the Sky's and reached the fullback Preston Campbell's as he jumped up high and the dragons winger Brett Morris smashed him and Preston Campell's did a back flip in the air and gave the Titans a penalty punt. After all that sweaty work at half time it was a draw 10-10. And started the golden point. Get a rest the Dragons coach said there's still `some more footy to play Jamie started it off. the Titans recived the ball and they tried getting close to the post so Scoot Prince or Matt Rogers can take a field goal. At the 89 th minute the Titans were right behind the goal line and Scott Prince was left Preston Campellwas left and Mat rogers was hooker he looked left looked right did a dummy pass and did a drop goal from right in front

Stars Of NRL

Hi I thought that I should make a team of STARS instead of a dream team. “Would you have a team with stars in it or normal players”? Ok here it is the best team in the world!! Fullback: Jarryd Hayne, Wingers: Kevin Locke and Lote Tiqiri, Centers: Greg Inglis and Israael Falau. Play makers: Johnathan Thurston and Benji Marshall, Second rows: Ukuma Ta’ai and Sam thiaday,Props” Russel Packer and Wille Mason and Hooker: Issac Luke!!

Bench: Brent Tate, Brett and Josh Morris, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater

Lachlan Coote and Lote Tiqiri

Lachlan Coote for the Penrith Panthers is on of the most spectacular but youngest NRL players around. But now there is Lote Tiqiri that plays for West Tigers is just unbelievable with his matter of skill that he has and uses. If these two men played for the same team, like Vodafone Warriors they will be unstoppable with Kevin Locke, Lance Hohia and many more. Lote has played union in his past career before he came to NRL while Lachlan Coote has played for Panthers since he debut. Lote now is one of the top try-scores in NRL this time but the leading try-scorer is I think Brett Morris or Lachlan Coote. These two men have had marvelous pass careers playing in NRL.

Immersion Assembly Term 3

An Immersion Assembly is when the start of every term their is r each term and we learn about different things like Dinosaurs and volcanoes.

Nooo!!! its all ready the first day of term3. I wonder what we are learning about. As I walked into the hall I spotted some Vikings and some Pirates. WOW!! I looked at the stage and I heard that we are learning about Mighty Mariners. How exciting is that!!

"Give it up for team four" Mr Burt said on the microphone. Mr Barks,Miss Squires,Miss King and Miss Garden all walked up the stairs and onto the stage. they were all vikings accept Miss King and Miss Garden. Miss King was pirate and Miss Garden was Rose off Titanic.

Tua vs Barrett

On Sunday last week I went to my friends house Larenzo to watch David Tua vs Monty Barrett fight up in America. Monty Barrett is a good opponent he is just like Tua hes won all his match's and no lost. David Tua has a very powerful left hand which knockes his opponents out and he's focused. But first it was five feather weight championship match's. So I waited and waited and waited till it was on. "MUM Its on its on Tua is fighting right now" Larenzo shouted out. "FIGHT!" the ref said ding ding ding, finally it started. punch to the body, block, move around, left jab to the face. "Go TUA!!" Larenzos Mum said. After a few rounds later David Tua got to tied and got knocked out but still got up and by the time was round twelve was over the judges gave the score cards to the ref and it was a draw and it was the first time David Tua had a draw!!

EB Games

On Saturday me and my sister went to Sylvia park to bye her boyfriend a birthday present.(did you know his birthday is one day before mine) While we were shopping I went to the EB game store and there was millions of games but I got Halo three and Burnout revenge. I looked at them and saw that they were $24 dollars each and I picked them up and took the games to the counter to pay for them and the lady at the counter said"if it is scratched you can bring it back before two weeks" and I went with my sister back home. When I got home I ran straight up stairs and played Halo three!

Warriors vs Panthers

On Sunday the Warriors played against the Panthers at their home ground in Australia. Out they come out of the changing rooms sprinting onto the field as they started. Kick off James Malony put foot to boot and booted it down the field. Petero Civoniceva took the first hit up for the Panthers, BANG! smashed to the ground. Once their players ran it was last and the number seven booted the ball in the air and gave Ropate pressure but he caught it. After a few minutes the hooter went for the end of the first half. Off they went back to their changing rooms. At the end the Warriors got two try's Malony and big Manu and for the Panthers they only scored one try and the 9th place won against 2th place.

GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!

Bay Roskill vs Mt Wellington Warriors

Today on Saturday the Mt Wellington Warriors faced the Bay Roskill Vikings. The last time we vs them we lost 32-18 everyone was up set till today we won 36-0 to us but is was a little bit easy. "Heads or tails'' the referee said it was heads and we were receiving the ball. Kick off the ball went flying to the side line Steven (my friend) caught the ball and step step and tackle. When it was last Bradley booted it off down the field and we chased like an army of soldiers. Smash he got hit!! After a few minutes later the referee blew the Wiesel and it was half time and we were leading 12-0 and at the end we won. And my friend Owen came to my house and brought some KFC.

Gardening Day

Today my family and I went to our Nana's house but first we had some lunch at the panmure bakery. We all had five dollars each. I got a bacon and egg pie, a ham and cheese bun and a Coca Cola drink. Once we finished off we went to our Nana's house. All of us started but I had nothing to do. So a couple of minutes later my older sister had to go some where and I took over her job which is racking the leaves,(I made a huge pile) It was really boring so I went and got a drink in the kitchen. After a while me and my younger sister sneaked out and strolled home. But the doors were locked and we went back and sat in the van till we went home.

Benji Marshell

The number six for the West Tigers is Benji Marshell. He's a very talented player you know. The two things I like the most about him is his flick passes and his speed. He is a Kiwi player too Benji should go to The Warriors since hes Moari. The West Tigers are having a good start at third place on the ladder. The two people I am looking up to in the Tigers is Lote Tiqiri and Benji Marshell.

Tonga

Hi I am a Tongan and we are the best of the rest!! Have you seen the wonderful Island of Tonga it is very relaxing when there's the warm sun, delicious coconuts, clean sea and beautiful people.
